- Both parts of the new style driving licence, or an old style licence + your current valid passport.
- Glasses or contact lenses, if you require them - you will be asked to do an eyesight test
Order of the Day
- Introduction to your Examiner.
- Sign declaration of insurance cover.
- Eyesight check.
- To vehicle for Tell me/Show me questions by Examiner.
- The Reversing Exercise and The Braking exercise.
- On-Road driving for approx 40-60 mins.
- Back to test centre for uncoupling and recoupling exercise.
- End of test - phew!
Check That the Vehicle you intend to drive during your test is:-
- Legally roadworthy and has a current MOT test certificate where applicable.
- Fully insured for its present use and for you to drive.
- Properly licenced with a valid tax disc displayed.
- Displaying L-plates (or D-plates in Wales) on the front of the vehicle (not on the windscreen) and the rear of the trailer.
- Make sure that the trailer is legally roadworthy and is at least 1 tonne MAM.

Category B
Cars or vans presented for the Test must be:-
- a four-wheeled vehicle of no more than 3500kg MAM (Maximium Authorised Mass)
- capable of a speed of at least 62.5 miles per hour (mph) (100 kilometres per hour (km/h))
- be fitted with:
- a seatbelt for the examiner
- a passenger head restraint, this need not be adjustable, but must be fitted as an integral part of the seat. 'Slip on' type head restraints are not permissble.
- an interior mirror for the examiner's use.
- L-plates displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle, but not interfering with the driver's or examiner's view.
Category B vehicles must also:
- have a speedometer that measures speed in miles per hour and kilometres per hour.
- have no warning lights showing i.e., the airbag warning light.
- be legal and roadworthy.
Category B+E - Car and Trailer test
Cars/Vans presented for test must be a Category B vehicle towing a suitably braked, unladen trailer of at least 1tonne Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM). The examiner may ask for evidence of the trailer MAM, e.g., manufacturer's plate. All vehicle combinations must operate on appropriate brakes and utilise a coupling arrangement suitable for the weight.
From April 2006
Externally mounted, nearside and offside mirrors for use by the examiner or any person supervising the Test.
B+E in the case of a vehicle first used on or after 1st October 2003 the following additional standards will apply:
The cargo compartment of the trailer must consist of a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the towing vehicle; the closed box body may also be slightly less wide than the vtowing vehicle provided that the view to the rear is only possible by use of the external rear-view mirrors of the towing vehicle.
If you overlook any of the above not only will your Test be cancelled, but you will lose your fee.
The photo card or current valid passport provides the examiner with photographic identification and the green paper licence gives you the entitlement to carry out the test.
You must be able to read a number plate with letters 79.4mm high from 20.5metres. New style number plates with a narrower font from a distance of 20 metres.
The examiner will ask you to sign a declaration that your insurance is in order.
