The braking exercise takes place off-road on a special manoeuvring area and not on the public roads. During this exercise the examiner will be beside you in the vehicle.
Test Requirement When Braking
The examiner will point out two marker cones approximately 61 metres (200 feet) ahead - see diagram opposite. You should build up a speed of about 20mph, and when the front of the vehicle passes between the two cones, apply the brakes stopping your vehicle and trailer safely and under full control.
Braking - Do
  • Stop the vehicle as quickly as possible.
  • Brake under full control of the vehicle.
  • Stop the vehicle as safely as possible.
  • Stop the vehicle in a straight line.
Braking - Do Not
  • Drive to slowly - less than 20mph.
  • Brake too soon - anticipate the marker points.
  • Brake too harshly causing the vehicle to skid.
  • Depress the clutch too late and stall the engine.
  • Take too long to stop.
